I'm right in the middle of a full leather interior rehab. project.
Has anyone removed the vinyl on the door panels?
Can't find anything in search mode, and Shane is going to tell me it can't be done. But I know somebody here has had success with removing the old stuff and adding new.
How does the old vinyl come off?

do you want to save it and reuse it?? if not i think a knife will work...
if you take the panel off the vinyl is folded over the back and fastened to the board there. Peel if off and carefully remove it if you want to keep it.
Easiest way, cut it off and throw it out.

If you're planning on recovering the doors with leather then you're doing something never intended from the factory. They are probably glued on and you are going to have to brave the uncharted waters of custom work. Good luck! I'd like to see some pictures.

Yes, I think they are glued on.
Next scenario-
Can the vinyl (included in Shane's 3 row leather kit) be installed over the old vinyl?

The fabric is glued on the pressed panel.
3M makes a product called #77 Adhesive to glue door panels. Spray both sides let dry to tacky stage than push them together. You need to make sure it's right the first time. It dosen't want to come apart after being pushed together.
Good luck

Just called my local Walgreens. They had 1 steamer in stock. I'm looking for 3M now.
Let's see how much damage I can do.

I just had a shop do this for me. It was $125 for both doors. It was well worth it for me because I didn't have to buy a whole slue of tools and materials I'll use once. I'd ask what your local upholstery shop will charge.
Good luck whichever direction you choose.

The local upholstery shop is doing it. He is whining about the door panels. I'm meeting up with him tomorrow am. At least I have a plan B. I really want to replace the vinyl on the panels. It makes the whole interior look better.

The vinyl is only glued on the back side of the panel,,,,there is 1/8 foam that may be glued down....don't make this a bigger job...just get back there and start peeling it off from the bottom and see what you run into. When in was installing my speakers I noticed the vinyl was loose at the bottom and was not glued of the front side

Went to the shop yesterday.
The vinyl in the middle of the door panel is glued behind the chrome strip as well as to the darker brown color vinyl. Steaming the vinyl or heating it from what I've seen won't work because your going to have to cut the lighter color vinyl out to replace it.
He is going to cut the light vinyl off at the chrome strip add some foam and use a special V type of tack strip, and staple that to the panel and then pinch the new vinyl into the tack strip and stretch it to fit. It looks like it will come out pretty good. The upholster is also replacing the dark brown material on the top of the panel IE- the door panel arm rest area.
I can't wait until it is complete.
Had a guy ask me what year my Land Cruiser was the other day ( before I pulled the interior out) while getting gas at the gas station. He started out with "so it's a 2000 and... 7...
